Tony West & The Imani Dancers

Artist's Narrative

Tony West & The Imani Dancers Tony West and the Imani Dancers is an ensemble of dancers, musicians, and actors who blend their contemporary experiences with  the influences of African heritage.

Tony West (musician, performer and educator) and Aziza West (performer, instructor and educator) draw inspiration from a variety of sources - from the vibrant style of West African drumming and dance to South and East African music, from the catchy rhythms of Latin America to popular line dances from the United States. They have an exciting and highly engaged teaching style, encouraging participation by students and teachers, to help them better understand the history and culture behind dance and music traditions from throughout the world.

All workshops include an extensive range of information and meet the fine arts music content standards for Historical, Cultural and Social contexts, Creative Expression and Communications.

For over 29 years, Tony and Aziza have conducted artist residencies, performances, workshops, teacher in services and professional development programs that have contributed to the cultural and educational life of communities throughout Ohio and the United States.

Their motto is:  African and African-American inspired drumming and dance - educating as well as entertaining in a historical manner.

Recent Feedback From Schools

Oh my goodness...All the students and staff raved about this performance! The parents were also thrilled with the stories the students shared! Tony West and his family were amazing involving students and staff in the program while totally entertaining all of us with their skills!

The children truly enjoyed the practice session so much they were singing the songs days after they left. We all appreciated the energy and spirit of the drums. The children could barely contain themselves whenever they heard the drums. They are still talking about their performance. The program complemented our early learning standards and our school focus of celebrating African American culture.

The artist engaged one of my most troubled students, and to see the look on her face while actively playing an instrument was well worth the cost of the program. The student left school with a smile on her face--I'd venture to say it was one of the happiest days of her life. The students and staff were fully engaged throughout the program, which complimented our current instrumental/vocal music program.
