Artist's Narrative

 GA-LI GA-LI brings the living values of many cultures to the classroom in clear, heartfelt ways through music, stories, and hands-on interactive experiences. Diversity in learning styles and a wide range of curriculum are addressed using an interdisciplinary, multilingual approach. Our endeavor is to provide opportunities for eyes, minds and hearts to open the positive, creative potential of each of us.

Availability

Available year round for programs beginning no earlier than 10:30 a.m.
Fees listed are for Columbus-area schools. This duo is based in Dayton.

Programs Available

Performance: We Are All Related/ Somos Un Pueblo (Grade levels K-adult)
Music, storytelling and poetry presented in an interactive and engaging one hour program. Featuring dynamic vocal harmonies and an eclectic array of instruments from Native American flutes and drums to blues harmonica and tenor guitar. Wisdom stories and folktales from Native American and Latin American traditions as well as original pieces.

The performance requires a 10 x 20 ft. space, and access to electricity. The run time is 50 - 60 minutes.

School performances are booked in conjunction with one workshop. Please select your preferred performance + workshop combination from the options below. The fee for a performance and one workshop is $750. Additional workshops may be added.

This program is also available as a performance-only for libraries and community centers. The time may be adjusted to fit your organization's needs.

Workshop: Gifts of the Americas: You Say Potato I say Papa (Grade levels K-adult)
From the abundance of Machu Pichu to the potato famine in Ireland, students will learn about the amazing story of the potato and its origins. Activities include storytelling, vocabulary development, and optional potato print making.

Workshop: Gifts of the Americas: In Like Flint in Peru (Grade levels K-adult)
Students will learn about the trade routes of the Americas and why Ohio flint has been found in ancient burial sites in South America. Activities include a simulated trade route of an Incan "Chasqui." Includes music and storytelling.

Workshop: Gifts of the Americas: Corn Grinding (Grade levels K-adult)
Students will learn about the importance of corn to indigenous cultures throughout the Americas. Students will also participate in corn grinding demonstration using a "Matate" or corn grinding stone.

Students will learn about the role of the storyteller, the various types of stories and how stories are passed on, and where to find them.

Storytelling Workshop: I'll Tell You a Story (Grade levels K-adult)
Students will learn storytelling techniques: memorizing a tale, voice, dramatic use of tone and pause, rate of speed, body language and facial expressions, movement, and stage presence.

Storytelling Workshop: I've Got a Story to Tell (Grade levels K-adult)
Students will continue to develop storytelling techniques learned in I'll Tell You A Story as well as the basic elements for writing their own story to tell. Participants will develop story plot - beginning, climax, and ending - and learn the importance of creating atmosphere through and the use of time and place details and character development.

Workshop: Dream Catchers (Grade levels K-adult)
Students will learn whom the Ojibeway People credit for bringing them the Dream Catcher. Participants will learn to make their own Dream Catcher.

Workshop: Medicine Wheel Part 1 (Grade levels K-adult)
Students will learn about the four directions of the medicine wheel, Pre-Columbian artifacts, and contemporary pan-Indian interpretations of the Medicine Wheel.

Students will learn more lessons of the Medicine Wheel, including pow-wow etiquette and regalia. Participants will learn to build their own Medicine Wheel.

Workshop: A Dance Around the Medicine Wheel Way (Grade levels K-adult)
Through interactive story and movement, students learn about the Medicine Wheel's lessons of the balancing of personal and social responsibilities - of leadership and stewardship. Discussions will include our volitional ability to make decisions for self and others, and how these decisions impact each other. Students will learn an Ojibewa style Snake Dance - "The Dance of Change."

Workshop: The World Through The Eyes of A Child - The Culture of My Community (Grade levels K-adult)
Students will improve communication skills and cooperative learning by participating in Intergenerational Story Circles, and the creation of a Mural based on the themes of Story Circles.
