PROFESSIONAL LEARNING IN ARTS ASSESSMENT LITERACY

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING IN ARTS ASSESSMENT LITERACY

High-quality assessments are an integral part of measuring and monitoring student growth and informing classroom instruction. Arts educators are often left on their own to develop assessments and identify student growth measures, often without adequate assessment literacy. Research indicates that a large percentage of arts teachers do not believe they've been adequately prepared to develop arts assessments, feel they do not have time to revise and improve their assessments, and typically work in isolation to find or create whatever assessments they do use.

The Ohio Arts Assessment Collaborative (OAAC), a consortium of Ohio school districts, Ohio Alliance for Arts Education, Battelle For Kids, and the Ohio State University, worked with K-12 arts teachers throughout Ohio to create an innovative suite of authentic, performance-based arts assessments to measure student growth in dance, drama/theatre, music, and visual arts.

These new arts assessments:

    • Are available for free to all Ohio teachers (www.bfk.org/ohioarts)
    • Align with arts education standards in Ohio
    • Were field-tested for validity, reliability, and ease of implementation
    • Include professional learning resources
    • Help capture the growth of students in dance, theatre/drama, music, and visual arts

In this professional development opportunity, teachers in all arts disciplines will develop skills in selecting, developing, and reviewing assessments. Sessions will focus on foundations of assessment literacy (validity, reliability, and bias), quality assessment design (blueprints, alignment, rigor, stretch, item design) and an understanding of why these are important to instruction and student learning. Based on the work of the Ohio Arts Assessment Collaborative, instructors are available to school districts, educational service centers, universities and colleges, and other education agencies. Experienced, professional arts educators from around the state have received intensive training as arts assessment instructors and are available to work with K-12 arts teachers in the development of their assessment skills.

Professional development workshops may be scheduled directly with the providers listed below. Or contact the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education to discuss your needs.
